The Why Behind Your Prayers

Updated: Apr 15, 2022

Need a little encouragement to get you through the week? Get your daily dose of devotionals to renew your spirit and refresh your soul.

Have you ever seen a mountain be thrown into the sea? My guess is probably not. However, if you are just focusing on the mountain, you may be missing Jesus's point. God is the God of the impossible and is capable of anything. Although we can ask for anything in prayer, we must think about a few things along with what we are requesting.

-What is your motive behind your prayer? Is what you are praying for simply for selfish gain or is your request to move your "mountain" to help in the fruitfulness and building of God's kingdom? God does care for even the smallest detail of your life, but our goal on this side of Heaven should not just be a cushy life. We are called to spread the gospel and be disciples. Check where your heart is at. Does your prayer only benefit you or could the people around you be witness to a heart-changing miracle that will build the kingdom of God?

-Have you forgiven the people who have wronged you in any way? Holding a grudge may be a barrier between you and your prayers being answered. Mark 11:25 tells us "And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses." (emphasis added). It is hard to hold a grudge and continue to have a pure heart. Why hold onto the hurts people have caused you if Jesus is willing to take them? Letting the grudges go not only takes the weight of hurt off of you, but also allows God to forgive you as well.

-Do you really believe God is capable? The closer you become to God, the more you know He is. A huge part of growing closer to God is simply to be in His Word. Read your Bible. If you do, you will find miracle after miracle. You don't have to question if God is capable. The Bible is proof of God's faithfulness and love for all of His people. Knowing and trusting His Word will strip away at your doubts. Open your heart to His Word and see what happens.
