Misconception #2: Church Is For Perfect People

Have you ever met a perfect person?

They don't exist. Except Jesus. He was the only one to walk this earth and never sin. I love the fact that He walked and talked and breathed and lived everything we do. He faced the exact same temptations that you and I face every single day. Maybe our struggles look different in a more modern world, but at the root they are the same. Jesus can extend us unlimited compassion, because he can not just sympathize but empathize with our every struggle.

If no one else is perfect, why do people act like they are? I suspect two reasons: pride or they are trying to cover something up. Take a scroll through any social media feed and you will see what I am talking about. Unfortunately, Christians are not excluded from this slippery slope of image.

Don't let a few "better than thou's" cloud your judgement of what an authentic Christian looks like. They are a perfect example of why we all need a little Jesus. Righteousness is a continual process that even the holiest of people need to recognize. "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." Romans 3:23-24

Perfection can't be grasped by anyone, no mater how hard we try to paint the polished picture. Our only way to inch closer is to put in the work to be made whole. Nothing in this world can do that for us, only Jesus can. We all equally need to be humbled to the realization that no one person is better or holier than the next. I think the honest Christian realizes how imperfect we really are, which increases our need for the One who is all the more. We need Jesus not because we are perfect, rather because we are not.
